The stories you find here come from me, Pat Hughes, from my home on a twenty-acre patch of the Kansas Tallgrass Prairie. I live here with my wife, Stephany, and our three boys, Ian, Quinn, and Colin. We have two dogs, too, Jack and Moe, and since March 2012, a series of ducks and geese, as well as wilder critters like armadillos, coyotes, muskrats, raccoons, possums, skunks, snakes, and on one occasion, a badger.
For over 25 years I have been collecting. I have been collecting pieces of life, pictures made of words, and stories of everyday--well, my everyday. They are stories that may entertain and may force thought in the process.
I am a teller of stories and have found a way to make a living at in: by practicing law. I am a partner in a Wichita, Kansas law firm, a litigator who relies on the power of true stories to persuade.
My writing for other purposes has been intermittent, a newspaper column in the Flint Hills Independent many years back, a contest entry here and there, and stories used in speeches from time to time. With this website I introduce my first book: Living with Ducks and Other Wildness.
Words have power. Words change people. Words cause them to do what they never dreamed they would and to think and feel things previously unknown. Words alter us. Well selected, words are a balm to heal.
